March 12, 2018 - Recipe Time!

I have a confesion to make; I did not make the recipe I posted on the 6th.  I did make salmon though, with a mayo/dijon mustard sauce with parmesan and breadcrumbs.  I cooked up some french beans and carrots and some rice.  I made enough for leftovers too!

Here is another recipe from the Nutrition Month 2018 resources.  TACO SOUP!  sounds soo good and looks pretty easy too.  Any takers?

March 8, 2018 - Nutrition Month 2018

One of my favorite things about food (aside from the tastyness) is the power it has to bring friends and family together.  When was the last time you got together with friends or family and food was NOT involved?  Why not put some effort into the food shared by trying new recipes or new foods.  Remember to put your phones away and the TV off to enjoy the time and food together.

Here is one of the Fact Sheets put together by Dietitian of Canada to help unlock the potential of food!

March 6, 2018 - Recipe Time!

Roasted Salmon and Broccoli with Lemon Parmesan Sauce.  Sounds good doesn't it?

I think I'll give this recipe a go this weekend, I have all the ingredients.  I have limes so I'll use those instead of lemons and I have the powdery paremesan, not the real stuff, oh well, that's how it goes sometimes.  I will also cut the recipe in half, I live alone, 4 days of salmon is a bit too much for me, even though I love salmon.

Check out more of Nutrition Months Feature Recipes HERE and have some fun in the kitchen!

March 1, 2018 - Happy Nutrition Month

This years theme is to unlock the potential of food.  Dietitians love food!

- brings family and friends together

- can be fun and exciting in the kitchen

Over the next month I will be posting handouts and recipes put together by Dietitians of Canada to help celebrate Nutrition Month.

January 30, 2018 - Early Years Centre

The early years centre in North Bay offers so many great programs and events.  Check them out online or on Facebook!

One event stood out to me:

The 3 benefits of breasfeeding:

1. convenience

2. cost

3. emotional bond building with your baby

It is recommeded that women breastfeed their babys exclusively for the first 6 months.

Help with the Registered Dietitians at Blue Sky are here for you if an alternative feeding method is needed.

January 16, 2018 - Physical Activity and Weight Loss

I bet one of the most common New Years resolutions I hear people talking about is going to the gym.  If you are a regular gym goer you can relate to how much busier the gym gets around this time of year.

Now going to the gym or starting any new physical activity is a FANTASTIC idea but keep in mind the reasons why physical activity is so great.

Physical activity can help with the following:

- blood sugar control

- blood pressure

- mood

- constipation

- bone density

- muscle growth

- socializing

- relaxing (yoga)

Here is what physical activity may not be so good at:

- weight loss

Here is a video explaining a little bit about why physical activity is not the best way to lose weight.

TIP: do not step on that scale and think there is no benefit to physical activity if you have not lost weight.  Keep at it, you are doing wonders for your health!

January 3, 2018 - Happy 2018!

No posts since June  My New Years resolution is to keep posting more regularly. a few tips to set a resolution:

*Don't set yourself up for a goal that wont or can't be maintained - "I will post on the BSFHT website 3 times everyday" vs "I will post on the BSFHT website 1 weekly".

*Don't set too vague a goal - "I will lose 10lbs" vs "I will limit eating out to 1 per week".

*Do be positive about your efforts - "I didn't go to the gym every day like I wanted" vs "I made it to the gym 3 times this week and felt really good after".

*Do celebrate your successes - "I'll buy myself a book after I've gone 3 days without smoking"

One of the theme for Nutrition Month is digestive woes.  It would seem that everyone these days is blaming gluten.  Thinking about eliminating gluten from your diet? Give this article a quick read.  It may not be gluten!  and I promise you, a diet with gluten is far easier then one without.

Talk to one of your Registered Dietitans at the Blue Sky Family Health Team about your tummy troubles before eliminating or adding anything to your diet.  You wont regret it!

January 9, 2017 - Canadian 24-Hour Movement Guidelines for Children and Youth

We talk so much about how good physical activity is for you. Recently, CSEP (Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology) and Participaction have come out with Movement Guidelines for Children and Youth.  My favorite part of the guidelines is reducing the sitting time to no more than 2 hours daily.  Remember these guidelines are for children and Youth, but as part of my goals for health, I try to limit my Jane the Virgin watching (or any show really) to no more than 2 episodes per day.

These guidelines also talk about sleep.  More to come on the benefits and importance of sleep in the coming days.
