RESPIRATORY THERAPY SERVICES

Breathing is essential to life.  The Blue Sky Family Health Team has a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) who is here to support patients with breathing issues.
What is a Registered Respiratory Therapist?
Registered Respiratory Therapists are licensed health care professionals who monitor, evaluate and treat individuals with respiratory and cardio-respiratory disorders.
The Blue Sky Family Health Team Registered Respiratory Therapist is licensed with the College of Respiratory Therapists of Ontario.  Registered Respiratory Therapists participate in on-going quality assistance activities to ensure high professionals standards and to maintain their license to practice.
The Blue Sky RRT is also a Certified Respiratory Educator (CRE).
 Certified Asthma and Respiratory Educators teach Canadians about their asthma and COPD, preventative measures, how to avoid triggers, the proper use of medications, diet and lifestyle counselling, and the use of written action plans that allow rapid adjustment of medications when symptoms worsen.
Educators are certified after successfully writing the national CAE or CRE exam. These exams are based on CNRC National Learning Objectives as well as the most up-to-date Canadian asthma and/or COPD consensus guidelines. CRE’s are required to recertify every five years.
Why see a Registered Respiratory Therapist or a Certified Respiratory Educator?
Some of the reasons could include, the education, support, screening for:
  • Asthma
  • COPD/ Pulmonary Rehab education
  • Smoking Cessation
  • Spirometry (breathing measurement)

What do Blue Sky Family Health Team Respiratory Therapists do?

The Registered Respiratory Therapist at the Blue Sky Family Health Team is involved in a variety of programs and offer in-house, diagnostic and counselling services for individuals with respiratory issues.
Respiratory therapists work with physicians or the nurse practitioner to diagnose respiratory issues such as asthma and COPD with the use of spirometry.  The Registered Respiratory Therapist is also involved with the smoking cessation program, to  helps people Learn How to Quit   smoking through smoking cessation counselling, education and resources.
Who can use this service?
Registered Respiratory Therapy /Certified Respiratory Educator support is for all Blue Sky patients.
How do patients access Respiratory Therapist support?

Referrals are generated through the Blue Sky Family Health Team physicians or nurse practitioners.
