Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) Program

1) This group is primarily designed for those people suffering with ANXIETY (MBSR-ANX). 2) A program developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn in 1979 at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center, 3) Lead by Phil Hobbs MSW, RSW; certified by the University of Toronto in Mindfulness Group Work. 4) It is a psycho-educational group work model (up to 12 people per group).

The opportunity for people to engage in a self-directed practice that moves towards greater levels of health and well being.

About Mindfulness:

In this program, mindfulness uses meditation as the primary tool for stress reduction.

The MBSR program is an evidence-based program that has been scientifically proven to be beneficial for people with medical distress such as: cancer diagnosis, chronic pain, addictions, hypertension, heart disease – and mood disorders such as depression and anxiety.

Mindfulness does not cure or prevent disease. Mindfulness is considered a “mind-body integrative medicine” (p. xlviii), impacting mental and emotional factors, and the ways in which we think and behave. These factors, cognitions, and behaviours can significantly affect our physical health.

The MBSR program is a “journey of self-development, self discovery, learning, and healing, in an effort to regain control of their health and to attain at least some peace of mind” (p. xlviii). What participants learn is “the ‘how’ of taking care of themselves” (p. xlviii). It is not a replacement for medical treatment, but is a vitally important compliment to it.

Location: Walk In Clinic Waiting Room (BSFHT)

Time: 1:30 – 4:00pm (2.5 hours) Wednesday afternoons
Duration: 8 Week Program (consecutive)
BSFHT patients; ages 16 & up
Maximum 12 participants per program
People suffering with various forms of anxiety

** All participants must receive a Referral from their family Physician**
